Creating Youtube Videos Out Of DVDs?

I’ve recently become interested in making music videos and other fanvid type things from DVDs of movies and TV shows I own, and I never intend to do any copyright infringement. I need to know of the best possible movie editing software [Windows Media Maker is the free service that I've been using but I am now going to buy my own, that will work 100x better hopefully] but I have no idea of any that really work. Also, I need a DVD ripping service that isn’t too complicated and does home movies as well as copyrighted DVDs [again -- I'm never going to send them out or do anything like that].

Money really isn’t an object so if it’s expensive, I don’t really care. I just need to know what services have worked for you :) Also any helpful hints you may have.
